greetings and a question: is it possible to be a kantian and an egoist? i've heard it's not possible, but i think it is, as i consider myself to be one. i do not think that any of us, ethically speaking, is exclusive to one ethical view. if one is an egoist, meaning one believes acts are morally permissible if the act maximizes the individual's happiness, and one can get to that (maximized) happiness through kant's categorical imperative, isn't that individual in effect a kantian egoist (or an egoist kantian)? i don't see that there is anything in kant's ethics that excludes operating according to one's own interests. is there? |
